Insulin Syringe Units Explained

On a U-100 syringe, 1 mL is 100 units, so 1 unit is 0.01 mL. Units are volume marks printed on the barrel; they don’t measure the substance inside. To turn units into an amount you need the solution’s concentration.

U-100 vs U-40

U-40 syringes are marked 40 units per mL, so a unit on a U-40 syringe is 0.025 mL. Reading a U-40 syringe with U-100 numbers (or the reverse) gives a volume 2.5 times off. The calculator uses U-100, the common kind.

Syringe units are not IU

IU (international units) measure the biological activity of a specific substance against a reference standard, and each substance has its own IU-per-mg factor. Syringe units are just volume. A syringe reading “10 units” holds 0.1 mL, whatever the IU content of that 0.1 mL is.

From units to an amount

amount = units ÷ 100 × concentration (per mL)

At 2.5 mg/mL, 20 units is 0.2 mL, which holds 0.5 mg. The mcg to mL calculator does this in both directions.

Frequently asked questions

1 mL is equal to how many units on an insulin syringe?

100 units on a U-100 syringe (40 on a U-40 syringe).

How many units is 2.5 mg on an insulin syringe?

It depends on the concentration: at 5 mg/mL it is 0.5 mL (50 units), at 10 mg/mL it is 0.25 mL (25 units).

How do I read a 0.5 mL insulin syringe?

It holds 50 units, usually with a line for every unit and numbers every 5 or 10. Each unit is 0.01 mL.
